WILLIAMS, IA - Melburne "Mel" Thorson, 88, of Williams, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Services will be held Tuesday, June 12 at the United Methodist Church in Williams with burial in the Williams Cemetery. Rev. Darwin Moore will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, June 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Williams. Memorials may be directed to the Williams Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Mel was born May 8, 1913, at Kanawha to Peter and Anna Nibe Thorson. He graduated from Randall High School. On Aug. 10, 1935 he married Hazel Couser at Zearing and was a farmer and electrician. He was a past mayor of Williams for six years; served on the Hamilton County Extension Committee for many years; ASCS Committee; and was active in the SALT Organization. He was a member of the Williams United Methodist Church, and was on the church administrative council. He was also involved in 4-H and youth organizations and was chairman of the Hamilton Extension Council.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel, of Williams; a daughter, Lois Lawson and husband, Russ, of St. Charles, Mo.; a son, Delmar Thorson and wife, Virginia, of Merced, Calif.; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Larry Thorson of Des Moines and a sister, Pearl Simpson of Clarion. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Irvin, Robert and Richard. Surls Funeral Home in Williams is in charge of arrangements.
