May 10, 2001Funeral services were held for Jerry L. Abbas, 56, on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. Pastor G. David Daley officiated. Special music was provided by Marilyn DeKruyff, organist, and Paula Abbas, soloist, and Dennis TerHark, soloist. Paula Abbas sang Precious Lord, Take My Hand and Dennis TerHark sang Amazing Grace. The congregational hymn was When Peace Like A River. Honorary casket bearers were Robert Schreur and Harvey Uken. The casket bearers were Tom Abbas, Bob Abbas, Darl Abbas, Gilbert Asbe, Bob Verbrugge and Louis Smidt. The ushers were Don Verbrugge and Nick Verbrugge. Interment was at the Amsterdam Township Cemetery of Kanawha. The funeral services were under the direction of the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home of Kanawha.
Jerry L. Abbas, 56, of St. Louis, Missouri, formerly of Kanawha, died on Saturday, April 28, 2001 in St. Louis. Jerry Lee Abbas, the son of Fred and Maude (Verbrugge) Abbas, was born June 6, 1944, in Mason City. He graduated from Kanawha High School in 1963. Jerry was active in the National Guard at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Jerry married Lucia Geary in St. Louis in October of 1966; he lived in St. Louis the rest of his life. The couple had four children - Rose, Jerry Jr., Anthony, and Gaylord. Jerry married Carole Inge in May of 1996 in St. Louis, Missouri. Jerry was employed with the Wonder Bread Company for 30 years, recently being retired. Jerry was a member of Bethany-Peace U.C.C. He influenced and touched the lives of many young people through coaching Khoury League baseball and soccer. Jerry enjoyed playing softball, fishing and watching St. Louis Blues hockey.
Jerry is survived by his wife Carole A. (Inge) Abbas, four children - Rose (John) Beckham, Jerry L. Abbas Jr., Anthony J. Abbas, and Gaylord L. Abbas; step-children - John Inge, Amanda (Michael) Hayden and Patrick Inge; grandchildren - Kristina Beckham, Michael Beckham and Elizabeth Hayden; one sister - Audrey (Norman) Mehl; and two brothers - Donald (Leona) Abbas and Denny (Jean) Abbas; and Lucia Abbas, his first wife. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Maude Abbas; and his sister-in-law, Eleanor Abbas.
