VERMILLION, SD - Perry Uhl, 61, died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with burial in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha, Iowa, at 5 p.m. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion, is in charge of arrangements.

VERMILLION, S.D. - Dr. Perry L. Uhl, 61, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., from complications of cancer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with burial at 5 p.m. in Amsterdam Township Cemetery at Kanawha. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements were completed by Hansen Funeral Home Vermillion, S. D.

Perry was born July 4, 1937, in Rodney, to Russell and Florence (Ferdig) Uhl. He graduated from the Smithland High School in 1955. He married Janice Kraft on June 4, 1961, in Corwith. He received his bachelor of arts from Westmar College in LeMars in 1959 and his master of arts degree from Colorado State College in Greeley in 1963. He earned his doctor of philosophy from Iowa State University in Ames in 1988. Perry was an Iowa educator for more than 28 years. He served as a teacher and coach in the school districts of Anthon-Oto (1959-60) and Corwith (1960-63). He was a principal in Roland (1963-66), before becoming Superintendent of Schools at Story City (1966-69), Roland-Story (1969-74), Estherville (1974-78), and Northwood-Kensett schools (1978-87). He was a graduate assistant at Iowa State University while working on his Ph.D. in 1987-88. For the past 11 years, he was a Professor of Educational Administration at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Dr. Uhl was active in many professional and community organizations. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was currently serving as a deacon. He just completed a five-year term on the South East South Dakota Activities Center (SESDAC) Board. He was a member of the South Dakota Beadle Club, and also belonged to the American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, School Administrators of South Dakota, South Dakota School Superintendents' Association of Curriculum and Development Midwest Council of Education Administration, and National Staff Development Council. He was a 21-year member of the Iowa Association of School Administrators serving as president 1984-85. He was an active member of Chamber and Development Boards in each community he served as superintendent of schools. He also served on several church boards and had been a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Ruchti, of Mapleton; his wife, Jan, of Vermillion; one son, David and his wife, JoEllen, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and one daughter, Deborah and her husband, Tim Reisner, of Minneapolis. He is also survived by one brother, Wilfred and his wife, Betty Uhl, of Smithland, and one sister, Norma and her husband, Duane Reed, of Atlantic. Also surviving him are six grandchildren, Taylor and Katelyn Uhl, and John, Zachary, Hannah and Noah Kraft. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; stepfather, Merle Ruchti; a brother, Ron; and his parents-in-law, Carl and Martha Kraft.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Dr. Perry L. Uhl Scholarship Fund at the University of South Dakota.
