NORMA GENE ZACHRY NEWTON RAMSAY, age 72, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, February 8, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Chapel.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Hobbs Wilson of Birmingham; three children, Amanda Lee Newton Arnold of West Palm Beach, Florida, Franklin Hobbs Newton and wife, Ruthie of Houston, Texas, and Robert Gene Ramsay and wife, Julie of Birmingham; grandson, James Henry Reyna of Houston; former husband and lifelong friend, Oscar Lee Newton, Jr. of Houston. She was preceded in death by former husband, Paul Moffett Ramsay, Jr.

Born on October 10, 1927, Norma was a graduate of Ramsay High School, Birmingham Southern College and the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University. She was a writer and editor of articles and textbooks for Baylor University College of Medicine-Microbiology Department in Houston, Texas, and until her retirement, worked in The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Orthopedic Research. An accomplished pianist and vocalist, she had served as music director for churches in Atlanta, Georgia, Houston, Texas, and Clarion, Iowa. In Houston, Norma was active in local theatre and served as president of the Delphian Society. In Clarion, Iowa, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and co-owner and manager of Ramsay's Clothing Store. A loving daughter, mother, and friend, Norma will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham, AL.
