Winston Nelson, a resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., since 1981, passed away at the Ridgecrest Adult Care Home in Tucson, Ariz., on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Born in Goldfield, Iowa, on April 14, 1914, he was the eldest son of George and Mary (Leffler) Nelson. He graduated in agronomy from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in 1941. He and Virginia E. Bradley married in St. Paul, Minn., on April 25, 1942, where they resided until he entered the Army during World War II. The couple then made their home in Alvord, Iowa, where they raised their family and operated a seed-corn business and a mink ranch. In 1970, the couple moved to Bellevue, Neb. Winston worked at the Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha, while Virginia worked at the Corps of Engineers. A move in 1981 brought them to Sierra Vista for his retirement and for her work at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.
Winston was preceded in death by his parents; a baby sister, Ruth; and two brothers, George and Lewis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; four daughters, Ingrid (Harold) Baillie of Sierra Vista, Andrea (Jeffrey) Schwarz of Bisbee, Ariz., Kathleen (James) Hadfield of Atlanta, Ga., and Vikki (Gregory) Buhr of Bellevue; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Baillie) Andrada of Phoenix, Ariz., Samuel Baillie of Panama City, Fla., Joshua Baillie of Daejeon, South Korea, Matthew Baillie of Tucson, Christine (Schwarz) Kelsey-Gray of Sierra Vista, Ian and Andrew Hadfield of the Washington, D.C., area and Nicholas and Amanda Buhr of Bellevue; great-granddaughter, Jackie Andrada of Phoenix; sister, Mary (Kenneth) Axon of Goldfield, Iowa; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Interment to be at a later date in Goldfield, Iowa. Memorials may be sent to the family for the Ridgecrest Adult Care Home or to Ridgecrest's address in Winston's name at 3831 N. Reno, Tucson AZ, 85705-2526. Arrangements have been entrusted to Jensen's Sierra Vista Mortuary.
