Silas Morris Davis, son of James and Anna Davis, was born at Utica, New York, July 18, 1870, and passed away at Clarence, Iowa, on Tuesday morning March 22, 1927, having attained the age of 56 years, eight months and four days. The family came to Cedar county, Iowa, when Silas was about three years of age and Clarence and vicinity has been the place of his residence ever since, with the exception of the years of 1920 and ’21 which were spend at Cedar Rapids and Marion. While engaged in the business of stock buying he became widely known and straight forward business methods gained for him a very wide circle of friends.
He was first married to Miss Ida May Ludwig, who died at Clarence March 14, 1907. On October 21, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Oleson of Dows, Iowa, who survives him as does also the following named brothers and sisters, Wallace, Eugene, Oregon; Fred, Pomona, California; James, Aberdeen, S.D.; Clinton H., Clarence, Iowa; William B., Tipton, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie Smith, Bushnell, Neb., and Mrs. Mattie Spear, Tipton, Iowa, and by his adopted son, Clarence Davis, and family of Clarence, Iowa.
He united with the Presbyterian church of Clarence by profession of his faith on Feb. 23, 1896, and for over thirty years was active in the promotion of the welfare of his chosen denomination. He was a member of Mt. Hope Lodge No. 501 A. F. A. M., DeMolay Consistory, Clinton, Iowa, and El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids and Clarence Chapter No. 461 Order of the Eastern Star.
The funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church and were largely attended. Rev. Wm. M. Evans of Cedar Rapids, delivered the principal discourse, Rev. Karl Fauth of the Evangelical church, dwelt chiefly on the patriotic services rendered by the deceased during the world war, and Dwight Krumboltz pastor of the Presbyterian Church, spoke of the character and fine friendly qualities of the deceased. The services were concluded with the ritualistic services of the Masonic Order very impressively conducted by Andrew McCormick of Cedar Lodge No. 11 Tipton, Iowa. Very appropriate music by the quartette and a solo by C. Z. Mack assisted very much in making the service beautiful and impressive and the very final floral display testified to the sympathy and esteem of a wide circle of friends. Interment was made in the Clarence cemetery.
Those from a distance who attended the services were: Mrs. L. S. (Martha) Beinhauer, Des Moines, Mrs. Oscar Oleson, Miss Buenetta, L. F. (Lars) Oleson, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Spear, Wm. B. Davis, Tipton; James Davis, Aberdeen, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Henyon, Clinton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson and Ivan Anderson, Moline, Ill.
