BELMOND -- Grant Seymour Chapman, 86, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (June 10, 1997) at the Belmond Community Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Fineran officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Grant was a "home town boy" living his entire life in Belmond. He was born to Edward and Julia Ann Wilson Chapman on June 25, 1910, on the family farm just south of town. He moved to town at the age of 10 with his five brothers and three sisters to 1st St. S.E. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1928, where he played football for three years. Grant was united in marriage with Lucile Klassi of Renwick, on Aug. 6, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home at 116 3rd St. S.E. and have lived there their entire married life. Grant owned and operated a DX Bulk Gas & Oil Business. He also did general trucking, was a painting contractor and drove school bus for the Belmond Community Schools, retiring in 1975. Grant enjoyed fishing and gardening. He and Lucile also enjoyed dancing, going to the Surf Ballroom every Friday night from 1937-1967. They also enjoyed square dancing and doing an advertisement for John Deere.

He is survived by his wife, Lucile A. Chapman; his daughter, Karen L. Chapman of Denver, and her fiance, Dick Hansen; a brother, Harvey Chapman of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and a sister, Sylvia Soma of Mason City. Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Stephen J. Stadtlander and his wife, Pam, of Trabuco, Calif., and Susan Kazarian and her husband, Kory, of Waterloo; and four great-grandchildren, Jesseca, Thomas and Sarah Stadtlander of Trabuco, Calif.; and Austin Grant Kazarian of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Grant in death were his mother and father; and siblings, John, Charles, Daisy (Dorothy) Kringle, Edward, Elmer and Garnet.
