William N. Gangestad Sr. died Dec. 1, 2007, at his son's home after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He was 79.

Mr. Gangestad was born in Goldfield, Iowa, on Jan. 6, 1927, and was a resident of Medford, Massachusetts formerly of East Cambridge and Burlington. He graduated from Goldfield High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Salerno Bay. He was honorably discharged in Boston in October 1947. He worked as a truck driver for Jordan Marsh until his appointment to the Cambridge Police Department in 1960. He served as a patrolman until his retirement in 1992.

He was the husband of the late Margaret (Costello) Gangestad; and father of Joan Avery, William Jr., George, and Edna Mangiacotti. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Fellsway West, Medford. Arrangements were made by the Cambridgeside Funeral Home.
