SAC CITY, Iowa -- Elma Julia Cordelia (Swenson) Maule, 97, of Sac City died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City. Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elma was born Dec. 29, 1904, in Rowan, Iowa, the eldest daughter of Carl and Nannie (Clemon) Swenson. She attended school at Soldier, Iowa, and was a member of the first class to graduate from Soldier High School. She went on to attend summer school sessions at Cedar Falls, Carroll and Sac City to receive her teaching certificate. She taught several years in the Monona County area. She married Robert Maule on Feb. 22, 1928, in Soldier. Robert died in 1990.

Elma is survived by her daughters, Marlene Lents and her husband, Oliver, and Vickie Girard and her husband, Terry, all of Sac City; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Dona Murray and her husband, Jim of Irwin, Iowa, and Beverly Maule of Lake City, Iowa; six sisters, Edna Mesenbrink of Onawa, Iowa, Gladyce Nelson of South Sioux City, Evelyn Mayberry of Onawa, Carol Flint of Los Animas, Colo., and Sylvia Reich and Norma Jean Leedom, both of Sioux City; and many other relatives and friends. She also was preceded in death by three sons, Donald, Robert and Marvin; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother; and a sister.
