Sioux City Journal, IACHEROKEE, Iowa - Vernon K. "Bud" Brandt Sr., 78, of Cherokee died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital of an apparent heart attack. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Timothy Schott officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Sunday and a family rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Mr. Brandt was born March 26, 1921, near Woolstock, Iowa, the son of Helmer H. and Lena (Caquelin) Brandt. He attended school in Webster City, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1939. While in high school he participated in all sports and was named captain of the baseball team. He married Shirley Hadaway of Stanhope, Iowa, in 1941. He drove a semi and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Yuma, Ariz. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943. He served in the American Theater of Operations and was discharged as a platoon sergeant in 1946. He was a member of the Enlisted Reserve until he enlisted in Company E, 133rd Infantry, 34th Infantry Division, Iowa Army National Guard in December 1946. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1950 and was promoted in 1953. He served as a platoon leader and company commander and was promoted to captain in 1954. He was promoted to major and served as Battalion Staff Officer and Assistant Division Transportation Officer with 234th Transportation Brigade. He graduated from Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., and Army Transportation School at Four Eustis, Va. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1969, following 26 years of service.
He married Marjorie (Staley) Knutson on Feb. 18, 1977, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed as a deputy sheriff in Hamilton County for 15 years. He was later employed with Maudlin Construction Co. in Webster City. He retired in 1983. He later worked for Ray Ames in Cleghorn, Iowa, and Walker Sand and Gravel Co. in Cherokee. He enjoyed sports, golfing, bowling and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Randall and his wife, Rebecca of Anchorage, Alaska, and Thomas of Honolulu; three stepdaughters, Shirley and her husband, Doug Radtke of Sioux Falls, Linda and her husband, Tom Ambrose of Fairbury, Ill., and Nancy McLaughlin of Aurelia, Iowa; a stepson, Don Knutson of Sioux Falls; a sister, Berniece Vogt of Des Moines; a brother, Max of Brook Park, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, V.K. "Buddy" Jr.; a brother, Donald; and an infant sister.
