Sioux City Journal, IARobert Lavon Sylvester, 76, of Sioux City died Friday, July 6, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Robert was born Aug. 3, 1930, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of Thomas Jefferson and Myra Sylvester. He was raised in the rural Webster City area and attended schools there. He graduated from Woolstock High School in 1948. Robert was in the Iowa National Guard in Webster City for nine years. He was united in marriage to Wilma Claude on June 21, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they raised their two children. Robert and Wilma resided in Sioux City for the past 45 years. He was employed by Knoepfler Chevrolet as a salesman for 15 years before his retirement. Prior to that time, Robert worked as a pressman for Verzani and VerSteegen Printing for 10 years. He started his printing career doing the color work for Hahne Print Shop in Webster City, doing the Black Angus magazine for 16 years.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1962. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge Triangle 643.Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Sioux City; a son, Tom Sylvester of Sioux City; a daughter, Tangela Sylvester of Sioux City; two brothers, Jim and his wife, Barb Sylvester and Guy Sylvester, all of Webster City; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a special aunt, Winonah Henry; a special uncle, Ed Henry; a nephew, Jamie Sylvester; a sister-in-law, Beverly Sylvester and his stepmother, Mayme Sylvester. Pallbearers will be Jeff Thompson, Brian Thompson, Troy Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Kendall Pruismann, Kory Sylvester, Mike McLaughlin and Jim Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Marv Thompson, Conner Thompson, Trey Thompson, Jamie Myers, Buryl Roe, Randy Roe, Trista Thompson and Kassidy Thompson.
