December 7, 2007FORT DODGE/WEST BEND — Verona I. Berninghaus, 84, of West Bend, formerly of Fort Dodge, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at the West Bend Care Center. Services will be held Saturday Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in West Bend. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the church. Harris Funeral Home of West Bend is in charge of arrangements.
Verona I. Speich, the daughter of Antone and Ellen (Johnson) Speich was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Goldfield, Iowa, and baptized Jan. 21, 1923, at Lake Lutheran Church, Goldfield. She moved with her family at a young age to the Renwick area. She attended Vernon Consolidated School and graduated from the Ottosen High School in 1940. On Jan. 4, 1942, she was united in marriage with Paul Berninghaus in Ceylon, Minn. The couple lived in the West Bend and Rodman area before moving to Fort Dodge in 1956. They resided in Fort Dodge during the majority of their married lives, where she was a waitress at various restaurants. She had been a resident of the West Bend Care Center since April of 2005.
Survivors include three brothers, Norman (Della) Speich of Hampton, Iowa, Arland (Marva) Speich of Marion, Iowa, and Robert (Karen) Speich of Algona, Iowa; her sister Ruth Speich of West Bend, Iowa; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul in 1978, a brother, Edwin, and sister, Evelyn Walston.
Verona was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Fort Dodge, the Ladies Aid and the Joy Club of the church.
