Karen Louanne Porter, the daughter of Neut and Ione (Haaland) Pohlman, was born March 14, 1942, in Hardy. She was baptized at Lake Lutheran Church at rural Goldfield. Karen was confirmed at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. She was raised and educated in Eagle Grove. On March 29, 1969, Karen was united in marriage with Francis Porter in Clarion. The couple lived in Eagle Grove for 38 years moving to Newton in July of 2004. Karen was a lifelong member of Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. After moving to Newton she transferred her membership to the First Lutheran Church in Newton. Karen worked at Farmer’s Exchange in Holmes, Emerson’s Veterinary Clinic, Fareway and Lewright’s Deli in Eagle Grove. After moving to Newton, Karen was employed at Wesley Park Centre, retiring in August of 2007 due to ill health. Karen’s biggest joy in her life was her grandchildren. She loved shopping for them and attending all their sporting events. She enjoyed playing bingo, talking on the phone, shopping, going for long walks with friends, cooking and baking for family and friends. She enjoyed being busy. Karen passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at her home in Newton, at the age of 65, after fighting a battle with cancer for eight months.

She was preceded in death by her father, Neut Pohlman and three brothers, Doug, Larry Dean and Michael Mosher. Those blessed to have shared in Karen’s life are her husband, Francis; two daughters, Kimberly (Russell) Ashley of Conway, Ariz., and Kelly Lewerenz of Iowa City; two sons, Kerby and Kirk Porter, both of Newton; her mother, Ione Knack of Eagle Grove; one sister, Kathy (Gary) Williams of Eagle Grove; one brother, Jack Mosher of Eagle Grove; seven grandchildren, LJ, Logan, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Howieson, all of Iowa City, and Brooke, Cameron and Baylee Porter all of Newton; five nephews, Al (Teri Jo) Pohlman and children Blake, Mackenzie, Morgan and Brenton of Eagle Grove, Lance Pohlman of Humboldt, Bradley Mosher of Eagle Grove, David Mosher and children, Alexis and Zachary of Eagle Grove, Brian Mosher of Algona and Cory Mosher of Des Moines; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Stan Peterson officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home, Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery in rural Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
