Services for Dr. John Lewis Powers, 82, of 2204 Greenwood Ave., will be 2 p.m. today at Carter-Oppold-O'Keefe and Towne Funeral Home, Ridgeway and National Drive, Waterloo. Burial will be in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Powers died Saturday morning [January 22, 1983] at Allen Hospital. He was born July 6, 1900, in Rowan, the son of Leland and Cora Cambellic Powers. He married Marian Lawson Feb. 14, 1948, in Dubuque. Known as Cedar Falls' "musical dentist," he retired in 1978. He had practiced in the metro area 35 years and in Pocahontas about 20 years. He performed with a group of doctors and dentists called the Medicat Orchestra and sang with the Waterloo Barber Shop Chorus. Powers, who graduated from the University of Iowa dental school in 1924, was a candidate in 1959 for the former Waterloo Riverfront Comission. He graduated from West High School in 1917.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Dr. John L. Powers II of Estherville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. L. E. Powers of Palm Desert, Calif. Memorials may be given in his name to the American Lung Association.
