Dr. Ivan Powers, Retired Physician

Dr. Ivan R. Powers, 76, of 151 Pershing Road, retired Waterloo physician, died at Allen Memorial Hospital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was born Sept. 23, 1895 at Dows, the son of Leland and Cora [Combellic] Powers. He attended the University of Northern Iowa (ISTC) at Cedar Falls and graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1923. He interned at Council Bluffs and began his practice in Waterloo in 1924, remaining in practice here until his retirement in 1967. Dr. Powers married Dorothea Herman on June 27, 1923, at Boone. World War I Veteran. Dr. Powers was a past president of the Black Hawk County Medical Society, a member of the Iowa Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Elks Club and First Congregational Church. He served in the Medical Corps in World War I in Europe and received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ted of Des Moines and Van of Oconomowoc, Wis.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. John L. Powers of 2204 Greenwood Drive, Cedar Falls, and Dr. Lee Powers of Winston-Salem, N. C. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Friends who wish may give memorials to the Allen Hospital School of Nursing. Memorial Services. Private committal services will be conducted Monday morning at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, with Dr. Charles Jacobs, pastor, officiating. Parrott & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The casket will not be opened at any time.
