Mrs. D. W. Whitten Buried Thursday

Last rites for Mrs. D. W. Whitten, 66, who died Sunday, Feb. 8, at the home of Miss Angie Baines where she had been convalescing after a heart attack, were held Thursday afternoon at the Rowan Congregational church, Rev. Harold Sanders officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Larry Aldrlch and Miss Kay Whitten, accompanied by Mrs. Howard Box, Bearers were nephews of the deceased: Clair Conn, Alexandria, Minn,, Ralph Whitten and Dennis Ramsey, Des Moines, Harold Conn, Parkersburg, Cecil Conn, Aredale, and Kenneth Lycke, Rowan. Interment was beside her husband in Graceland cemetery.

Gladys Evelyn Whitten, only daughter of Henry T. and Katheryn Conn,, was born Jan. 11, 1889, at New Hartford. Mrs. Whitten died in Rowan on Feb 6, [1955] at the age of 66 years and 26 days, She moved to Rowan with her parents when a young girl; she attended the public schools In Rowan and graduated from the Rowan high school. She attended the State Normal college in Cedar Falls, after which she taught in the Rowan vicinity and in Charles Mix county, S. D.

Gladys Evelyn Conn was united in marriage to Daniel W. Whltten in Rowan on July 28, 1909. They were the parents of five children: Linden, Evelyn, Wayne, Daniel and Marilee. Mrs. Whitten was a member of Chapter 357 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. When but a young girl she became a member of the Rowan Congregational church and she was always active in the work and spiritual life of the church.

Sho was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Cheater Conn, who died Dec 3, 1948, and her husband who died six weeks ago on Dec. 15. She is survived by her five children: Linden C. Whitten, Coffeyville,Kan.; Mrs. Walter Jennings, Streator, Ill., Dr. Wayne Whitten, Houston, Tex,; Daniel Whitten, Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Whitman Osgood, New York City; and one brother, Dallas Conn of Des Moines; one granddaughter, Sally Ann, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral service for Mrs. Gladys Whitten last Thursday included Mr. and Mrs. Clair Conn and son, Jimmy of Alexandria, Minn,, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Schweiger, Sheryl and Ricky of Jefferson; Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Conn, Ralph Whitten and Ruth Ann, Dannie Ramsey and Mrs, Luther Johnson, all of Des Moines, Mrs. Susan Conn, Mrs. Ivan Ayers and daughter Darlene, and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Conn of Aredale, Mrs. Ella Conn, Parkersburg, Mrs. Chris Klemonsen, Clear Lake; Mrs. Chris Lewis, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Staley, Webster City; Mr. and Mrs. Harm Brlnkman, Dows; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Sheriff of Sheffield; Mrs. Milton Ramsey and Dorothy Jacobson, Belmond; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wlnslow, Geneva; Reuel Silvey, Iowa Falls; Mrs. G. R. Sheldon, Mr. and Mrs. Max Sheldon, Mrs. Ray Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Barlow and Mr. and Mrs. Melvln Weld, all of Clarion.
