Helen S. Bahr (1926-2006)

SUMNER — Helen Shirley Bahr, 79, of Sumner, died Monday, Sept. 4, at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner. She was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Hardy, daughter of Peter Lloyd and Hattie Nervig Hanson. On Sept. 1, 1946, she married Charles F. Bahr Jr. at Clarion. He died Nov. 29, 2004. Mrs. Bahr graduated from high school in Blairsburg, and later attended Waldorf College and Iowa State Teachers College. She taught school for a brief time before her marriage. Later she and her husband farmed near Dows for seven years, then near Woolstock for 13 years, and in 1966 moved to the Richfield area near Sumner, where they farmed until retiring in 1988.

Survivors include: two sons, Timothy (Sharon) of Hawkeye and Mark (Lois) of Sumner; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a brother, Harlan (Karen) Hanson of Webster City; and three sisters, Orpha (Winnie) Walker of Woolstock, Dorothy Olsen of California and Margie Hames of Williams. Preceded in death by: a brother, Peter Lloyd Hanson; and a sister, Lorna Richardson.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Richfield, with burial Richfield Cemetery, both in rural Sumner. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
