L.T. Ryder Dies; Rowan Historian

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church at Rowan with Rev. Jack Rampelberg officiating for Mr. Leonard Ryder who passed away at the C. H. Armour Nursing home in Clarion Friday morning. Pallbearers were. Don Mathiason, Charles Sellers, James Keleher, W.C. Bailey, M.W. Reese, and Karl Rietz. Miss Bonnie Frohling was the soloist.

Leonard Ryder passed away at the Armour Nursing Home in Clarion on July 21st. 1961 at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 11 days. His death was due to a series of strokes. Leonard Thompson Ryder, son of Ethan and Jane Ryder was born near Rowan, Iowa on October 10th 1876. He grew up on his father's farm located south of Rowan and attended the rural school in this area. Mr. Ryder lived and worked on the family farm until the death of his father in 1903 and then he cared for his invalid mother until her death in 1921, when he retired from the farm and moved into the town of Rowan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers. William J. and Charlie, who died at an early age. and Edgar who died January 25th, 1900. He is survived by one sister. Mrs. Clara Steenblock of Clarion. Iowa, one nephew. Mr. Ralph Ryder of Grundy Center, Iowa. Three nieces, Mrs. Ethel Simpson of Burbank, California, Mrs. Ella Bailey of Rowan, Iowa, and Mrs. Ruth Hendrickson of Clarion. Iowa. 11 grandnephews and nieces, 24 great grandnephews and nieces and many friends.

Mr. Ryder was member of the Methodist Church of Rowan. Iowa. He was known for his friendliness, for his desire to share with others, for his love of nature whether it be flowers, animals or stars, for being a man of temperance in his habits, and for being a reliable source of information for those interested in the historical events of the past concerning the Rowan community.
