Edith Lotia "Edie" Alman, 87, of Hendersonville, N.C., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at Elizabeth House in Hendersonville after a long illness. Her body was cremated. No services are planned; burial will be in Springfield, Iowa. Arrangements with Asheville Mortuary Service in Asheville, N.C.

Survivors include a son, Theodore R. Strait (Diana) of Maquoketa; daughters, Susan A. Gouge (Allan) of Holly Springs, N.C., and Elizabeth A. Childers of Arcadia, Fla.; stepson, Keith Alman (Maria) of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

A native of Rowan, Iowa, Edith was a daughter of Harley and Alma Pearson Grimes and widow of Richard Alman, who died April 28, 2007. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College, was an administrative assistant and a member of the Sierra Club and N.C. Arboretum.

Former Alaska resident Edie Alman, 87, died July 11, 2007, at a hospice home in Hendersonville, N.C. No service is planned. Burial will be in Springfield, Iowa.

Born Oct. 23, 1919, in Rowan, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harley and Alma Pearson Grimes. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College in Iowa and had worked for many years as an administrative assistant. She lived in Alaska for more than 30 years. She worked for the State of Alaska. Mrs. Alman was a member of the Sierra Club and the North Carolina Arboretum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Alman, on April 28. She is survived by her children, Theodore Strait of Maquoketa, Iowa, Susan Gouge of Holly Springs, N.C., and Elizabeth Childers of Arcadia, Fla., and their spouses; stepson, Keith Alman of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
