Richard K. Alman, 89, of Hendersonville, NC died Saturday, April 28, 2007. He was a native of Hudson, Ohio, and a graduate of Michigan State University, where he majored in recreation and municipal forestry. He was city arborist for Cedar Rapids, Iowa; administrator of Linn County Parks, where he built the largest multi-purpose county park system in the state; and superintendent of parks for the state of Alaska, where he developed the largest state park system in the United States. After retirement, he developed Pinicon View Tree Farm near Anamosa, Iowa. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He moved to Hendersonville in 1992. He was a member of the N.C. Arboretum, the Michigan Club of Hendersonville and the WNC Civil War Round Table; a 30-year member of the Sierra Club and a 65-year member of the International Society of Arboriculture.

Survivors include his wife, Edie [nee Grimes, formerly of Rowan, Iowa]; a son, Keith Alman and wife, Maria, of Naperville, Ill.; stepchildren, Susan Gouge and husband, Allan, Ted Strait and wife, Diana, and Elizabeth Childers and husband, Leonard; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

No service is planned. Burial was held in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at Black Mountain. Asheville Mortuary Service was in charge of the arrangements.
