Charles Harold Payne, son of Charles H. and Anna G. Payne, was born July 29, 1892, at Corwith. He died in Clarion Jan. 24, 1951, after a few hours illness. He was married to Bernice E. Trowbidge June 15, 1919. Two children were born to this union, Dennis C., 18, and Judith L., 15, all of whom survive him. His early childhood was spent in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. At high school age he and his mother came to Clarion. He worked for the Great Western as conductor until 1925 when a railroad accident incapacitated him. He was then assistant trainmaster until the Great Western offices were moved from Clarion. In 1930 he started with the New York Life Insurance Co., completing his 20th vear with them in 1950. He was a member of the Congregational church and a member of the choir for 20 years. He belonged to the following organizations: Cyrene lodge No. 325 AJF. & A.M.; Mt. Lebanon Cornmandry No. 61 Knights Templar; Na-Ga-Zig Temple of Des Moines; Royal Select Masters of Iowa, Eagle Grove; Royal Arch Masons of Iowa, Eagle Grove; Order of Eastern Star, a past patron; Order of Railway Conductors; member of the board of education of Clarion public schools for 15 years. One oŁ his most pleasurable hobbies was playing Santa to hundreds of children each Christmas. He was also greatly interested in all sports activities in school. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Clarion Congregational church, with Rev. Ray Steakley officiating. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Eyler funeral home. Rev. R. Brough of Dows conducted the Masonic service. Interment was in the Clarion Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers were C. J. Christiansen, George Richards, J. C. Mayer, C. A. Smith, L. R. Stark, Dr. R. G. Bird and Jay Tice. Mrs. Anna Mayer, Mrs. Norine Crowe and Mrs. Neva Hanseri were in charge of flowers.

He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Lillian Haydon of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Stephen; and three sisters, Stella, Minnie and Mayme.
