Former Resident Buried Sunday

Funeral services for Ed Smutney, 76, former Clarion resident, were held Sunday afternoon at the Church of Christ. A resident of Hilton Village, Va., in recent years, he died Thursday morning at a hospital in Newport News, Va. Mr. Smutney was a merchant most of his life. He owned and operated a number of retail furniture stores in southern Iowa prior to coming to Clarion where he was in the furniture business for about 11 years. Later he was in the general merchandise business at Parkersburg. Iowa, but returned to Clarion in 1931, and remained here until 1938, at which time the family moved to Baltimore, Md.

Edward Thomas Smutney, son of Ignatius and Mary Wagner Smutney, was born Sept. 15, 1875, at Carroll and passed away at Mary Immaculate hospital in Newport News, Va., on June 25, 1953, after a lengthy illness. He was united in marriage to Emma Mechem of Clarion on August 16. 1911. To this union were born two daughters. Edra (Mrs. Harry A. Mayer Jr.) of Warwick, Va., and Irma (Mrs. Knox B. Spence) of Washington, D. C. Since 1948. when Mr. Smutney suffered a stroke, he and his wife made their home with their daughter, Edra in Warwick. A lifelong Christian and church member, he belonged to the Hilton Presbyterian church in Warwick since living there. Besides his widow and daughters, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. E. V. Warren of Oakland, California; one brother, Charles A. Smutney of Riceville; and two grandchildren. Harry and Thomas Mayer of Warwick, Va. At the funeral services, Wesley Warner of Goldfield sang "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me." He was accompanied by Mrs. Calvin Milan at the piano. Pallbearers were Alre R. Watts, Eugene R. Allen, Lynn and Maurice Mechem of Clarion; Galen Hauge of Britt; and Wynn Mechem of Geneva. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
