Edwin R. Versteeg, 89, of Friendship Haven, formerly of Humboldt, passed away June 28, 2007 at Tompkins Health Care Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Livermore with full military honors by the American Legion. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt.

Mr. Versteeg is survived by his wife, Muriel M. Versteeg of Friendship Haven; children, Eddie Lee (Leo) Formanek of Clear Lake, Dr. Kyle (Phyllis) Versteeg of Fort Dodge, Julie (Jeff) Larson of Fort Dodge, and Dr. Dirk (Adele) Versteeg of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Nicole Versteeg; brothers, Ralph, Paul, John, and Robert Versteeg; and sister, Clara Lilly.

Edwin Roy Versteeg, the son of John and Dora (Schregardus) Versteeg, was born April 9, 1918 oat Mitchellville, Iowa. He was raised and educated there and graduated from Mitchellville High School. He attended William Penn College on a football scholarship and was united in marriage to Muriel M. Reece on June 28, 1939 at Lancaster, Missouri. Following his graduation from William Penn, Mr. Versteeg was a teacher and coach for the Prescott and Clarinda School districts. He served in the United States Naval Air Corps as an Aerologist and attended the University of Chicago where he played as the pitcher of the baseball team. Following his discharge the couple made their home at Maquoketa and Washington, Iowa where he again taught and coached. In 1951, he retired from teaching and went to work for Darling’s Soil Builders before going to work for Farmland Industries first as a salesman, then developing new Coop’s and as a financial Advisor. Ed maintained an office in Eagle Grove and the family made their home in Humboldt for 11 years. In 1964, they bought their farm north of Livermore where they remained for nearly 30 years. They then made their home near their son Kyle in Fort Dodge and enjoyed spending summers in their cabin near the river and winters in Arizona. They then made their home at Humboldt until moving to Kenyon Place at Friendship Haven in September of 2005. Mr. Versteeg was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, the Humboldt Rotary Club, the American Legion and Lions Club in Livermore, and served on the board of the Humboldt County Historical Society. Ed was known as a gentleman farmer and enjoyed woodworking, discussing politics, playing Bridge and 500 and taking bus trips with Muriel.
