Otto L. Olsen, 77, of Fort Dodge, died June 29, 2007 at his home. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2007 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Grindberg officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the VFW Post 1856. Interment will be held in Newark Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. today at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Otto Leo Olsen, the son of Lewis and Hattie (Wickernik) Olsen, was born on October 23, 1929 in Vincent, Iowa. Otto graduated from Eagle Grove High School and then served in the United States Navy from 1950 - 1954. He served on the Destroyer USS RB Anderson in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the military, Otto attended Tobin Business College. He was united in marriage to Patricia Louise Smith on July 27, 1956 in Mallard, Iowa and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Otto retired from Centel Telephone Company after 30 years of employment. He later worked in real estate for a few years. Otto was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia Louise Olsen of Fort Dodge, his children Joanne Mericle, Sandra Higgins both of Cedar Falls and Douglas (Kris) Olsen of Fort Dodge; seven grandchildren, Adam, Alyssa, Bryce, Bayleigh, Amanda, Ashley, and Alexis; his siblings Carl Olsen, Laura Laurence, Julia Wilshusen, Sarah Olsen, Esther Albrecht, Oscar Olsen and Olaf “Bud” Olsen. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leonard, his sister Olive Nichols and infant sister Laura. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
