Maynard Wesley Azeltine, 80, of Rowan, died Thursday (May 1, 1997) at Clarion Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor JoAn Lent Skyrme officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, with graveside services by the Andrew Whitten American Legion Post #159 of Rowan. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.

Maynard Wesley Azeltine, the son of John W. and Ellen (Whitten) Azeltine, was born Sept. 29, 1916, at Rowan. He graduated in 1934 from Rowan High School. On Jan. 22, 1939, he was united in marriage to Ardelle M. Cooper at Mason City, and three daughters were born to this union. He entered the United States Army during World War II and was discharged in 1946. After residing in Sheffield and Whittemore, Maynard and Ardelle moved to Rowan in 1946 to operate the Azeltine Food Market. In later years, Maynard was employed as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1981. Maynard was an active member of the United Church of Rowan, Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his children and his grandchildren.

He is survived by daughters, Karen Cunningham and husband, Marlan, of Ankeny; Deanna Ware and husband, Ed, of Muscatine; and Mary Jo Roberts of Coralville; grandchildren, Laurie and David Moore of Ankeny; David and Lisa Cunningham of Indianapolis, Ind.; Susan and Matthew Terrill of Muscatine; Andrea and Tim Albers of Indianapolis, Ind.; Kimberly and Kristin Roberts of Coralville; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Andrew, Emily, Margaret and Elizabeth; and a sister, Louise Greenfield of Rowan.
