J. Earl Mason Sr., 98, formerly of 804 15th Place N.E., Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 1997) at the IOOF Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating. Interment will be in Union Mound Cemetery, Sumner. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. The family suggests memorials to the J. Earl Mason Sr. Memorial Fund.

J. Earl Mason Sr. was born Dec. 7, 1898, south of Indianola in Warren County, the son of William S. and Elizabeth Mason. Earl attended country school and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1919. He married Neva G. Darnell on July 8, 1926, at her family's home in Ringsted. Earl owned and operated the Algona Hatchery from 1926 until 1939. In 1939, the Masons moved to Mason City, where Earl owned and operated J.E. Hatchery and installed hardwood floors. Earl was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Harding Lodge #649 A.F. and A.M., and was a former member of the IOOF Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Neva G. Mason of Mason City; two sons, J. Earl Mason Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Mason City, and Dr. Robert D. Mason and his wife, Anne, of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Gregory R. Mason, Roderick E. Mason, Scott Mason and Paul R. Mason; two nieces, Ila Veldhouse of Clarion, and Lela Willey of McGregor, Minn.; two great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Mason; and one sister, Mary Streeter.
