July 10, 1920 - July 20, 2003

Merritt Ellsworth McCoy, 83, of Hampton died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in hospice care at Wright Medical Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, July 22, at the Church of Christ in Hampton. Burial was at the Hampton Cemetery with Gary Cox officiating.

Merritt was born in Wisconsin on July 10, 1920, to Willis and Violet (Bayliss) McCoy. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army in W.W. II, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds incurred in Italy. Merritt married Gwyneth Brewster at the Hampton Church of Christ on Feb. 1, 1948. They moved to Clarion in 1959 where he worked as assistant county engineer, Wright County, until he retired. He has been a member of the Hampton Church of Christ since childhood, serving as an elder and teacher for many years. Merritt was also a member of the American legion. He was a kind and generous man and an example of a faithful Christian.

Survivors include his wife, Gwyneth of Clarion; two daughters Lori Cox and husband Gary of Carlisle and Cara Flavio and husband Max of Concord, Ill.; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister-in-law; and other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother Martin "Zeke" McCoy.
