June 28, 1918 - August 24, 2000

Alvin Harold Riis, 82, of Hampton, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility. He donated his remains to the Mayo Medical Foundation for the advancement of medical science. A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 27 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton. Rev. Jon Anderson and Rev. Karla Griffen officiated.

Alvin was born June 28, 1918, on a farm near Coulter to Andrew and Julia Larsen Riis. The family moved to Minnesota where they lived until his sophomore year in high school when they moved back to Coulter. He graduated from Dows High School in 1938 and had recently attended his 62nd high school reunion. On April 5, 1942, he married Ardyce Hinckley and they moved to Ross Township, east of Chapin in 1951. Alvin served on boards of the Franklin County Farm Bureau, Hampton Creamery, and 15 years on the Sheffield-Chapin School board. He was a member of the Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield, where he was a Sunday School teacher, Brotherhood officer, and on the church board and building committee. When they moved to Hampton in 1981 they became members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was past member of Hampton Forum Club and was active in the Hampton Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife, Ardyce; two daughters, Beverly Sperry and husband, Chip, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Susan Bruxvoort and husband, Larry, of Garner; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Freebert and Irvin, and two sisters, Vernetta Erickson and Elvira Riis. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton was in charge of arrangements.
