July 21, 1908 - February 21, 2001

Phyllis Rollene, 92, of Dows, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines of cancer. A memorial celebration was held Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Dows.

Phyllis was born July 21, 1908, in rural Dows to Herbert and Rose Hagen Root. She graduated from Dows High School in 1925 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate. She taught for eight years in Holstein and Klemme. On June 11, 1935, she married Milo Rollene at the home of her parents. They farmed in Morgan Township until 1938 when they moved to their present home in Oakland Township. She lived there until October 30, 2000, when she moved to Des Moines and lived with her daughter, Corliss. On Feb. 10, 2001 she moved into Kavanagh House. She was Sunday School Superintendent at the Popejoy Methodist Church for 17 years, taught Sunday School at the Dows Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows. Her hobby was making clowns and crocheting afghans.

She is survived by a son, Nile, of Dows; two daughters, Shirley Bird and Corliss McDonald, both of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Loraine McDougal of Los Angeles, Calif. and Clarice Houck of Dows. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; a brother, Harold; and one sister, Viola. The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
