February 13, 1920 - February 2, 2003

James C. "Jim" White Sr., 82, of Dows died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Memorial services were held Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Dows Presbyterian Church with inurnment in Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Rev. Tom Hershey officiated.

Jim was born Feb. 13, 1920, at Yonkers, N.Y., to Thomas and Agnes Nevins White. He moved to Chicago at a young age and graduated from Tilden Tech and attended the University of Chicago for two years. On June 4, 1944, he married Jean Drout in Chicago. They lived in Illinois for six years and then moved to Dows in 1952. Jim worked at various jobs in Dows and his last job was with Riverside Book and Bible Company in Iowa Falls. He was active in the Presbyterian Church in Dows, the Lion's Club, the Gideon's, the Dows Historical Society and was a scout leader. Jim received the Iowa Hall of Fame Volunteer Award in 1991 and the Iowa Tourism Award in 1999. He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling in their trailer with his wife.

He is survived his wife, Jean, of Dows, a daughter, Pat Drury, and husband Bob of Henderson, Ky.; two sons, Jim, and wife Janet of Ankeny and Ric and wife Cinda of San Marcos, Texas; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas, and wife Joyce of Ringoes, N.J. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dows Community Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
