Irving Wiarda Sr., 94, of Dows, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at the Franklin General Hospital Care Unit at Hampton. Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the United Methodist Church in Dows with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Rev. Tony Hershey officiated.
Irving was born Feb. 10, 1906, near Allison, to Jacob and Rena Ackerman Wiarda. He was raised and educated in the Dows area. He worked for one year as a lumberjack in California before returning to the family farm. On Dec. 27, 1932, he married Ila Lavonne Cundall in Illinois. They farmed near Burdette the first year after they were married and then moved to their present farm north of Dows. They had been married 63 years at the time of his wife's death on in 1997. He entered the Care Unit at Hampton in July of this year.
He is survived by three sons, Irving Jr. and wife, Lolaraye, of Dows, Marlin and wife, Norene, of Aurora, Neb., and Merlyn and wife, Collette, of Dows; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Dean of Grundy Center, and Darius of Boulder, Colo.; and a sister, Elizabeth Norell of State Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Bill, Virgil and Bernard; a sister, Ellen; and a brother and sister in infancy. Willim Funeral home in Carion was in charge of arrangements.
