June 30, 1918 - June 4, 2004

WATERLOO - Melvin H. Guse, 85, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Waterloo, died of pneumonia Friday, June 4, 2004, at DVA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 10, at 11 a.m. the Faith Assembly of God in Elk Run Heights with burial in the Garden of Memories with full military rites. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 9, from 4-7 p.m. at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, 965 Home Plaza, Waterloo.

Melvin was born June 30, 1918, in Galt to Herman (Carl) and Florence (Rose) Guse. He attended school in northeast Iowa. Melvin joined the U.S. Army April 17, 1941. He belonged to the 34th Division 133rd Infantry (Red Bull Division). On Dec. 14, 1956, Melvin married Jackie Brown at Nashua. He worked at Rath Packing Co. as a meat packer for 26 years until his retirement in 1980. Melvin enjoyed camping, baseball and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Stanley Guse of Mesa, Ariz., Michael Hindal of Mason City and Robert Hindal Jr. and wife Christy of Des Moines; two daughters, Patricia Hartman and husband Michael of Des Moines and Phyllis Hanf and husband Mitchell of Blaine, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchldren; and one brother, Howard Guse of Boone. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jackie; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Edith Kraemer and Dora Mumper; and one brother, Harry Guse.
