Mrs. Janice Ducharme (Rice) Stephenson 1913-2007

Tryon, N.C. - Janice Rice DuCharme Stephenson, 93, of Braewick Estates, Tryon, N.C., died Monday, March 26, 2007 at her home. Born in Eagle Grove, July 5, 1913, she was the daughter of Harriett and Norman Rice of Algona. She attended Wellesley College, graduated from the University of Michigan where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. In 1936 she married Charles A. Ducharme II in Algona in the Congregational Church. They resided in Grosse Pointe, Mich., for 40 years. She was an active member of the Junior League of Detroit, Tau Beta Association, the Garden Club of Michigan, piano accompanist for the Morning Music Club, docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts, member of the Country Club of Detroit and the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. She enjoyed many summers in her home on Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada. In 1983 she married John A. Stephenson, Jr. in Tryon, N.C. They summered in Madison, Conn. and wintered in Tryon, N.C. Janice will be remembered for her love of family, the arts, her piano playing, animals, flowers, and the great outdoors.

She is survived by her children; Charles A. Ducharme III and wife, Mary Kay, Julie Doc Haynes and husband, Pryce, Mary Janice Gonsaulus and husband, Clyde, and two step-children. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nine step grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren, her loving sisters-in-law, Isabel Child of Tryon, N.C., and four nephews, including Jon Ducharme of Tryon, N.C. A memorial service was held Friday, March 30, 2007, at 1 p.m. in the Congregational Church of Christ of Tyron, N.C., with Rev. Robert Barrows officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Mich. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Tryon Fine Arts Center, 34 Melrose Ave., Tryon, NC 28782 or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, C/O Hospice House, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
