Jerry Dean Leven, longtime Kay County resident, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center. He was 71. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Grace Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John J. Michalicka, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jerry Dean Leven was born Sept. 6, 1931, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Joseph E. and Grace Brown Leven. He graduated from Newkirk High School and then attended Northern Oklahoma College and Oklahoma State University. During his school years, he worked with his father in the pipeline construction business. On April 16, 1952, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He served with the military police in many places including Okinawa, Japan, Vietnam and Germany. His last duty was as a safety technician, and he traveled to all 50 states performing inspections and offering safety training. He retired as a master sergeant on April 30, 1976. Following his retirement, he returned to Kay County and, on June 7, 1982, he married Bea McCubbins in Miami, Okla. He worked in security at Conoco and later in the fueling area of the airport. He also volunteered at the hospital. He was confirmed in the Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he had served as chaplain, a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed dancing and reading.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, J. Dean Leven of Dawsonville, Ga.; one daughter, Pam Oliver of Georgia; one stepdaughter, Marianne Pitts of Ponca City; one sister, Lola Oehlert of Bucyrs, Kan.; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack L. Leven. Casket bearers will be VFW members Gary Main, Don Blimm, Herb Hopkins, Jack Sifford, Marvin Rider and Bob Henderson.
