Donald L. Thompson, 76, of Belmond died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines. Memorial graveside services for Donald Thompson will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Belmond Cemetery with Paul Christensen, Commander of the Belmond V.F.W., officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.
Donald, the son of Richard and Matilda Sjoberg Thompson, was born June 4, 1924, in Belmond. He grew up in the Belmond area where he attended school and graduated from high school. Donald entered the United States Army in March of 1943 and served as an Automatic Rifleman during World War II. He participated in various battles in the European Theatre. Donald was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He returned home in 1945. After returning home, Donald was employed at Tomco Seed and worked as a painter. Donald was united in marriage with Betty Hobbs on July 26, 1974, in Canton, S.D. The couple made their home in Belmond where Don continued to paint, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Donald is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter, Donna Thompson of Cedar Rapids; one stepdaughter, Deborah Mantia of Wheaton, Ill.; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Cortney; three great-grandchildren; stepmother, Helen Nelson of Belmond; one sister, Anita and her husband, Gerald Whipple, of Belmond; three brothers, William and his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City, Duan and his wife, Linda, of Belmond, and Jack and his wife, Marlys, of Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roger; and one half brother, Richard "Dickey."
