Emma Mary Wessels, 92, died on Monday, August 16, 2004. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Rev. William Kroon officiated. Organist was Maxine Whitty and soloist was Marilyn Janssen. Ushers were Bud Boelman and Leon Robertson. Casket bearers were Marlin Stadtlander, Bob Vierkant, Robert Modderman and Wayne Pals. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Emma Boelman, was born on September 19, 1911, at home in Avery Township, Hancock County, the daughter of Ben and Ella (Eekhoff) Boelman. She was one of 11 children and attended rural schools. She married George Wessels on January 29, 1943, at the Reformed Church in Meservey. They made their home in Belmond for many years. She was an active member of the Bethany Reformed Church and was involved in the Guild and study groups. Emma was a homemaker and had done housekeeping for many people. In earlier years she enjoyed camping and trout fishing trips with her husband. Family reunions were very special to her. Favorite pastimes were marbles, cards with her grandchildren, Bingo, "500" card clubs and going on bus trips.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1996; siblings, Rena, Alice, Hannah, Harry, Ben, Clarence, Andrew and Henry. Survivors include her sons, Jerald Wessels and his fiancée, Debbie Buehler of Belmond and Ardell Boelman, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center; grandsons, Jason (Jackie) Wessels and their children, Madison Kaye Ann and Tristan David of Belmond and Josh (Mandy) Wessels of Dows; brother, Donald Boelman of Tucson, Arizona; and sister, Grace Johnson of Belmond.
