Betty Gallagher, 84, wife of former Independent editor and co-owner, J. R. "Pat" Gallagher, died on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 in Iowa City. A private family service will be held at a later date. The Gallaghers lived in Belmond from 1949 to 1968, at which time they moved to West Branch. Betty retired as an archivist at the Herbert Hoover Memorial Library in 1985, the same year she graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in history.

Survivors include her children, Nancy (Jon) Mendenhall of Fort Collins, Colorado, Dennis (Lynda) of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Kevin (Rose) of Emigrant, Montana and Steve (Carol) of North Liberty; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
