Funeral services for Gladys A. (Gilbert) Larson of Jackson were held Tuesday morning, Dec. 14, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Dr. Martin Lucin and the Rev. Dan Taylor officiating. Gladys A. Larson died Dec. 10, 2004, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Burial was in Union State Line Cemetery, Dickinson County, Iowa. Casket bearers were Gladys’ grandsons: Tom Larson, Jim Pomerenke, Steve Pomerenke, David Gilbert, Dayton Gilbert and Douglas Gilbert. Honorary casket bearers were all of her grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Ushers were Kent Johnson and Gene Michelson. Music was provided by organist Melynda Tracey and soloist Steve Pomerenke. Arrangements were in care of the Sathe-Osterberg Funeral Home of Jackson.
Gladys Amy Foster, daughter of Charley and Nellie (Olson) Foster, was born on July 22, 1908, in Wright County, Iowa, near Goldfield. A year later, the family moved to Humboldt County, Iowa, where they lived until 1916, when they moved to Petersburg Township, Jackson County, Minn. Gladys graduated from Petersburg Consolidated School in 1926. On June 8, 1927, Gladys was united in marriage to Alfred Gilbert. They farmed in the area until 1936, when his health failed. Alfred died in 1938. To this union, they were blessed with a son and two daughters. In 1941, Gladys and her children moved into Jackson. She was employed for three years at the J.C. Penney Store, and then became the owner of the Teenie Weenie Grocery that she and her children operated for a few years. After that, Gladys was employed for 12 years at the Davies Ready To Wear store, where she was the buyer and floor manager. In 1959, Gladys married Lawrence Larson. He died in 1973. Gladys continued to make her home in Jackson until July 2000 when she became a resident of the Jackson Pines, and the Jackson Municipal Nursing Home in June 2002, and the Jackson Good Samaritan Center in October of 2003. Gladys was baptized on Aug. 30, 1908. She was confirmed on Feb. 11, 1923, at Union State Line Lutheran Church in Petersburg. She became a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson where she taught Sunday school, weekday and Vacation Bible School, and was active in the Mission Circles.
Gladys is survived by one son, Darrel and wife Bonnie Gilbert of Jackson; one stepson, Duane and wife Marilyn Larson of Jackson; two daughters, Ardys and husband Burdette Theophilus of Clovis, N.M., and Lois and husband Robert Pomerenke of Mesa, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Other survivors include three sisters, Juanita Wachal of Jackson, Verna and husband Eldon Winter of Jackson, and Eleanor Synstelien of Fergus Falls; two brothers, Gaylord Foster and Cliff Foster of Jackson; one sister-in-law, Irene Foster of Estherville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Alfred Gilbert and Lawrence Larson; three brothers, Glen Foster, Buel Foster and Delmer Foster; three sisters, Mildred Foster, Neva Ringkob and Ardell Schaffer; and two stepsons, George Larson and Lowell Larson.
