May 8, 2000THORNTON - Glen W. Echelberger, 77, of 500 N. Fourth St., died Sunday (May 7, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors performed by the Clear Lake VFW. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the services. Family suggest memorials be directed to Thornton E.M.T. or to Glen W. Echelberger Memorial Fund.
Glen was born July 13, 1922, in Clarion, the son of Ross and Lucy (Haupt) Echelberger. The family lived on a farm near Rowan until Glen was in the eighth grade. They moved to a farm south of Ventura and Glen attended and graduated from Ventura High School in 1940. Glen entered the U. S. Army during War World II and served in Africa and Italy. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. Glen was married to Phyllis C. Christiance June 20, 1947, at the United Brethren Church in Ventura by the Rev. E. M. Miller. They made their home in Clear Lake and later Goldfield where he was employed in the creamery as an assistant butter maker. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Thornton where they lived. In 1955 they moved to Thornton where he operated a Farmers Cooperative Gas and Oil tank wagon service for many years. Later he operated the LP business with the same company. In 1977 he became a salesman for Floyd and Leonard Auto Electric in Mason City, retiring in 1991 due to ill health. Glen enjoyed fishing, gardening and most of all his family.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Phyllis Echelberger, Thornton; a son, Michael Echelberger and his wife, Donna, Rockwell; his daughter LuAnn Echelberger Scott, Mason City; two grandchildren, Todd Echelberger and his special friend, Fay Heginger, Klemme, and Michelle Echelberger, Rockwell; one sister, Delores Behrens and her husband, Vern, Sebring, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Hummel and her husband, Ron, Ankeny; one niece and two nephews; and a long-time friend of the family, Elwood Pilz, Clear Lake.
