Dorothy Mehus Johnson, 78, formerly of Britt and Belmond, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in the St. Olaf Cemetery, Belmond. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church in Belmond. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy, the daughter of Alfred and Grace Abbas Johnson was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Dorothy grew up in the Belmond area, attending Belmond schools. On Nov. 7, 1941, she was united in marriage to Granville Mehus. The couple made their home in the Belmond/Kanawha area, where Dorothy was a homemaker, but she also worked at various businesses, such as the Hughes Cafe, the Farmer's Produce and was a nurse's aide for a time at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital. Granville passed away on May 29, 1961. She was then united in marriage to Howard Johnson on Oct. 22, 1966, in Britt, Iowa. The couple made their home in Britt, where Dorothy worked at the We-3 Grocery. Dorothy also cared for people in their homes. In 1990, Howard passed away. She enjoyed doing needlework, collecting rocks, working in her garden and watching birds. Dorothy was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond. She was a resident of the Westview Care Center for a short time before moving to the Nelson manor Nursing Home in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Brown, of Newton; her son, Bruce Mehus and his wife, Helen, of Indiana, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Jody Treider, of Fairmont, Minn.; five grandchildren, Tammy, Scott, Chad, Brian and Melanie; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Alvera Phoenix, of Tucson, Ariz.; Josephine Shelburg, of Des Moines; and Kathleen Sazanovich and her husband, Donald, of Mason City; and two brothers, Marvin Johnson and his wife, Therese, of Stacyville; Kenneth Johnson and his wife, Dorothy, of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Adean Dorr and her husband, Leland, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Granville in 1961; her daughter, Sandra, in 1976; a grandson in 1986; her second husband, Howard, in 1990; two sisters, Marie Curtis and Jennie LaRue; and two brothers, Fred Johnson and Merriell Johnson.
