WHITNEY, LONNING, MASON, REISER, WHISTNANT

Floyd G. Whitney, Jr., died at home on Saturday, October 19, 2002. He was born in Washington, DC, on February 4, 1920, to Floyd G. Whitney, Sr., and Katherine Mason Whitney. He was graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta, GA. He attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While still a student at the University, he was called up for military service prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a liaison pilot for the duration of the War, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant and serving overseas with the 5th Liaison Squadron in Burma. Following the War, he married Norma Virginia Lonning of Goldfield, IA, and began work in the insurance industry. He worked in all aspects of the surety bonds field for companies in Atlanta, Charlotte, Kansas City, and Myrtle Beach. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Raleigh and subsequently to Chapel Hill following the unexpected death of their daughter-in-law, Jean Marie Whitney, to help their son in the care of their three small grandsons.

His survivors include his wife, Norma; his brother, O. Mason Whitney and his wife, Helen of Atlanta; his son, Floyd G. Whitney, III, and his wife, Diane of Chapel Hill; his daughters, Cynthia W. Reiser of Houston, TX, and Dr. Katharine M. Whitney, DVM, Ph D, of Princeton, NJ; and his grandchildren, Whitney and Serena Reiser and Robert, James, and Patrick Whitney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Katharine M. Whistnant of Atlanta; his daughter-in-law; and his son-in-law, Richard A. Reiser.

His funeral will take place in St. Benedicts Anglican Catholic Church in Chapel Hill on Thursday, October 24, 2002, at 3 PM with the Rev. Father Scott McCleary officiating, followed by burial in the church yard. The family will hold a reception at the home following the funeral.
