Margaret Faye Whyte

Margaret Whyte of Lacey passed away Jan. 20, 2003. She was born in Goldfield, Iowa July 2, 1908 where she grew up and graduated from Goldfield High School. She attended Business College in Des Moines, IA, received her B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Iowa State College and took graduate work in Social Welfare Administration at the Univ. of Iowa. Upon the death of her father in 1932, she returned to Goldfield and took over the operation of his Ford Agency for 2 years. She then went on with the Iowa State Dept. of Social Services where she held several positions, serving the last 2 years as Assistant Director of Public Assistance. She resigned in 1945 and moved to Olympia, WA. After coming to Olympia she operated the White House Tea Room on the Shelton Highway for 2 years and then went back into social work. In 1948, she became the Executive Secretary of the Olympia Y.W.C.A where she served until 1957 when she was appointed as Executive Secretary for the Governor's Council on Aging to set up a state program on Aging within the State Department of Public Assistance. She continued in this position and directed the statewide program until she retired in 1970. She and Marie Laueroth moved to one of the first homes in Panorama City early in 1964. She took active part in the early organization of the retirement community and has continued active participation and service in community life in both Olympia and Panorama City. She was a member of Olympia First United Methodist Church, Olympia Y.W.C.A., American Association of Retired Persons, Tillicum & Queens Orthopedic Guild, Safeplace Guild and the Panorama City Library Association and Benevolent Fund. She served a term on each the Panorama Resident Council, Benevolent Fund Board and the Foundation Fund. She also served for 20 years as a Trustee of the Panorama City Trust Fund. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Pearl Whyte of Goldfield, IA; eight nieces and nephews and their 21 children. Her brother, Conger and sister, Ruth preceded her in death. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 22 at 4pm in Panorama City, Quinault Chapel.
