Claribel Elvina Bingham, 100, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of the service Tuesday at the church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of the arrangements. The family of Claribel E. Bingham has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake in her memory.

Claribel Elvina Bingham was born on Sept. 27, 1898, in Eagle Grove, the daughter of Howard and Iona (Shepherd) Griffith. She received her elementary education in the Eagle Grove and Hampton schools, graduating from Mason City High School. She also attended and graduated with a two-year teaching certificate from Iowa State. After completing her schooling, she taught rural country schools in North Iowa. She was united in marriage to Jay Bingham on Nov. 30, 1922, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in September 1980. After their marriage they lived in Manning until 1975 and then moved to Clear Lake. She enjoyed singing and was the choir director in the United Methodist Church in Manning. She also enjoyed sewing and flowers, but she was best known at Christmas time for her home-made candy and cinnamon rolls. Claribel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter LE in Clear Lake, and was a former member of the United Methodist Church, Manning.

Left to cherish her memory are one son, Dale S. Bingham and his wife, Celia, of North Liberty; one daughter, Joyce E. Hudgens and her husband, John, of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Sherry Narusiewiez and her husband, Steven, of Oakdale, Minn., Sue Wetsch and her husband, David, of Urbandale, Jim Hudgens and his wife, Suzi, of Plano, Texas, Stephanie Bernhagen and her husband, Paul, of Kissimie, Fla., and Dirk Bingham of North Liberty; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Claribel was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Bingham; her parents; four sisters; and one brother.Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel
