Monroe E. Newcomb, the son of Edwin and Edna (Wood) Newcomb, was born January 6, 1917, on a farm west of Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High in 1936. On March 9, 1941, Monroe was united in marriage with Gladys Saboe at the Badger Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Eagle Grove for 65 years and moved to the Meadows of Clarion in March of 2006 and celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Monroe farmed until his retirement in 1982. He also served as the country school janitor at Troy #6. Monroe was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, the rural Young Married Group, card club and coffee club. He enjoyed fishing, traveling in their RV, gardening and reading.

Monroe passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at USA Healthcare in Clarion at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Thomas Weiss. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Newcomb of Clarion; children, Sandra Eberhard and husband Dave of Des Moines, Linda Weiss and husband Tom of Clarion, Nina Cullinan and husband Tom of Carroll, Bruce Newcomb of Eagle Grove, Renae Handley and husband Larry of Des Moines and George Newcomb and wife Kathy of Fort Dodge; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Ringer of North Carolina and Dorothy Helgevold of California; brother, Don Newcomb of Eagle Grove and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Paul Stone officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Memorials may be directed to Eagle Grove Dollars for Scholars.
