Luella H. Bohning, 96, died on Monday, November 3, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 9, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. The Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home of Belmond was in charge of the arrangements. Organist was Dona Cleveland. Casket bearers were Daryl, Peter, Scott and Phillip Bohning, Ken Hawley and Don Kusian.
Luella was born on July 27, 1907 on her parents farm near Wedrow, Illinois, the daughter of William and Fedelia (Hile) Rabey. When she was four the family moved to a farm near Belmond. Luella attended rural schools and the Belmond High School, graduating in 1924. She taught in rural schools near Belmond for five years. On June 23, 1930, she married Peter S. Bohning at the Little Brown Church at Nashua and they made their home on a farm near Belmond. They had three children, Shirley, Daryl and Donald. They moved to Belmond in December 1963. In addition to helping her husband on the farm, Luella was a life long homemaker. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing games. Her family was the thing she cherished the most. Luella loved to visit with her friends and always kept in contact with others through cards and letters. She was a long time member of the Belmond United Methodist Church, the Belmond Grandmothers Club and the Rebecca Circle. After her husband's death in 1970, she continued to live on her own until becoming a resident of the care center in July 2000.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Donald Bohning (lost at sea); grandson, Joel Borreson; sisters, Loretta and Della Mae; and brothers, Delbert, Howard and Clarence. Survivors are her daughter, Shirley Borreson of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota; son, Daryl (Sue Ellen) Bohning of Warren, Connecticut; grandsons, Scott Bohning of California, Phillip Bohning of New Jersey and Peter Bohning of Warren, Connecticut.
