Hillena Kurtz, 97, of Belmond, died on Saturday, November 1, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 4, at the United Methodist Church, with burial in the Belmond Cemetery. Hillena, was born on July 25, 1906 in German Valley, Illinois, the daughter of Anno and Jennie (Aldrich) Terhark. She lived in the Belmond area most of her life. She married Mike Kurtz on October 18, 1927 and he was killed in the Belmond tornado in 1966. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; three sisters; and eight brothers. Survivors are daughters, Jean O'Donnell of Amery, Wisconsin, Ruth (Johnnye) Goll of Garner and Carole (Sanford) Morton of Coulter; son, Bob (Irma) Kurtz of Rancho Cordova, California; and sister, Sadie Swenson of Belmond.
