Marion J. Martin, 64, of Belmond, died on Friday, August 29, 2003. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, September 3, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery.

Marion was born on June 20, 1939 in Indianapolis Indiana, the daughter of Albert E. and Dorothy S. Martin. Because her cerebral palsy required special education, Marion attended the St. Mary's School in Nauvoo, Illinois, Franklin Special Education School in Ames, Iowa, and the St. Mary's of Providence School in Chicago, Illinois. She continued working toward her high school equivalency degree in Belmond. Marion took pride in her various employment opportunities. She worked at the Mary Greeley Medical Center and the Head Start program in Ames, and at St. Francis in Belmond. She volunteered at the Belmond Public Library, Luick Memorial Pool, Belmond Health Care Center, Hospice, Walk for the Cure, and the St. Francis Church. Marion enjoyed traveling abroad with her parents and on local trips with family and friends, and she enjoyed sharing her photos of these events. She attended afternoon gatherings at the Leinbach Center. Her hobbies included reading, embroidery, playing cards and tending flowers. With the support of her parents, friends and community, Marion was able to have her own apartment and to independently participate in many Belmond area activities. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Francis Xavier Rosary Society. Marion participated in the Special Olympics.

Preceding her in death were her mother and brother, James. Survivors include her father, Albert of Belmond; sisters, Jane (Schuyler) Van Gorden and Linda (Wade) Clark; sister-in-law, Sharon Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
