Anthony Steffen Berns, 18, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, as a result of a car accident north of Rowan. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 6, 2003, at the Belmond-Klemme High School gym, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Ushers were David Hess, Brian Kapka, Travis Kline, Justin Trees, Alyssa Pals, Clint Wilkinson, Kyle Wilkinson, Shawna McLaughlin, Travis Roberts and Reece Boller. Honorary casket bearers were the Senior Class of 2003, athletic team members and his friends. Casket bearers were Terry Wesenberg, Matt Hagen, Lucas Frohling, Christopher Roberts, Loren Robbins, Reagan Swisher, Lucas Winfrey, Kara Erickson and Nicole Mewes.

Anthony, the son of Bob and Connie (Steffens) Berns, was born on May 3, 1985 at Clarion. He lived his entire life in Belmond and graduated from the Belmond-Klemme High School, in May 2003. He worked during the summer with his dad at the golf course. Anthony was very active in sports and participated in basketball, baseball, golf and football all four years in high school. He was always a team player and never searched for the spotlight. He played for the love of the game. He loved the Belmond Baseball League (BBL), and as he grew older, he continued to coach. He was happiest when he was with Whitney and his friends and was rarely seen by himself.

Anthony was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rex Steffens and great-grandparents, Gerald and Marie Berns. Survivors include his parents, Bob and Connie Berns of Belmond; brother, Terry (LeNay) Wesenberg of Florida and their children, Brooke and Kylie; grandparents, Loretta Steffens of Fallon, Nevada and Bob and Fran Berns of Belle Plaine; aunts and uncles, Phyllis (John) Serpa of Fallon, Brian (Kim) Berns of Jefferson and Lisa (Bob) Vileta of Marengo; and soul mate, Whitney Allen of Belmond.
