FOLLOWWILL, HAWK, BIVINS, HEGGE, MARTIN, MEYER

M. L. "Pete" Followwill, 73, died on Thursday, May 29, 2003. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 31, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard. Special music was by organists, Dona Cleveland and Lyn Courson, a duet by Denny and Don Meyer and postlude by Jon Hinman. Casket bearers were Merle Been, George Hinman, Harry Nelson, Tom Stadtlander, Gary Followwill and Harvey Meyer. Ushers were Jeff Anderson and Al Rodriguez.

Pete was the son of Matthew and Olah Martin Followwill, born on March 11, 1930 in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in the Korean War and was discharged in 1954. Pete and Jeanette E. Meyer, were married on January 15, 1956 in Manly. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Belmond. In 1954, Pete was a salesman for Followwill Implement in Belmond, and he became co-owner in 1956. In 1970 he became owner-operator of the John Deere dealership until 1982 when he retired. Pete enjoyed his grandsons, loved golfing and sports, was a member of the Belmond Jaycees, was a founding member of the Belmond Country Club and a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Julie Hegge of Osceola, Wisconsin and her children, Anthony (Barb) Hegge and their son, Bryce of Monticello, Minnesota and Andrew Hegge of Osceola; son, Jerry (Kim) Followwill, M.D. of Victoria, Texas and their children, Sam and Tom; brother, Dorwin Followwill; and sisters, Margaret Hawk and Pat Bivins.
