Wilbur Frederick Luick, 88, died September 13, 2005, in Davis, CA. Services will be held June 16, 2006 at the Belmond United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Druhl officiating. Inurnment with military honors will take place in the Belmond Cemetery at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family or the church.

Wilbur, the son of Harold and Ella Furseth Bliss Luick, was born April 3, 1917 in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1935 and from Grinnell College in 1939. Wilbur married Janice Marie Johnson on September 2, 1941. Soon after the wedding he entered the U. S. Navy, serving during World War II in the South Pacific. Wilbur was discharged as a lieutenant in 1946. He began teaching college speech and earned a masters degree from Michigan State University. He continued his teaching career as a professor at Stevens College in Columbia, MO and San Jose State in California. Although a professor by trade, Wilbur's passion was synchronized swimming. A member of Synchronized Swimming Hall of Fame, Wilbur's contributions to the sport are numerous. He invented special sound equipment, edited and produced a monthly newsletter called the "Synchro-news", and helped recruit coaches for several Olympic champions in this event.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Wilbur is survived by his wife; daughters Katie Luick of San Jose and Barbara Luick-Jahn (Tom) of Davis; and grandchildren, Erica and Adam Frederick.
